My favorite Super Hero
While I was growing up, I had my share of "super heroes"
First, I think it was 'Gigantor' He was a huge robot, he saved the world and I was a big fan of his. After that, I think it might have been Super man, maybe Batman or maybe even Spider Man. I'm not really sure, but there was always a Super Hero. Now years have passed and my super heroes have changed thru the years.
However, I just realized my latest favorite Super Hero is Fabian Cancellara. Now, I have always rooted for Lance Armstrong in the past, as his story is made for the Movies. However, Lance has always seemed to have the strongest team and utilized his team to his advantage. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But sometimes, I wondered, if Lance was on a team without superstar domestiques...could he still win the big one?
Now the Tour De France is an insane race, it last nearly a Month and your efforts need to be guarded like Fort Knoks because if you empty the tank day 7, you had better be sure you have legs to race day 8. However, the Classic single day races are much more primitive and team tactics are less of a factor . In these races, if you are the strongest and race smart you stand a good chance of winning.
I have slowly been becoming a bigger fan of Cancellara lately as I really love his style of racing. Having witnessed some of his solo breakaway stick, I often admired his commitment to win. Well watching him go out back to back races and making his solo breakaway stick has officially earned him Super Hero status in my book. Just to try and imagine what type of pain tolerance one must have to break away from a pro peloton and give 100% effort for 50 kilometers is unimaginable...almost super human.
I was rooting for him as I would root for Batman to escape a being dropped into a pool of aligators.
However, I did feel bad for Tom Boonen, especially after Cancellara pulled away from Boonen just a week earlier in the Tour of Flanders. You knew Boonen was not going to let Cancellara slip away again. But, after Boonen took a massive pull to strip down the chase group, Cancellara took off like a rocket. Bang, that was it...race over. Cancellara was not to be seen again. Like a Super Hero.... Cancellara was gone. Watching boonen trying to reel Cancellara in was admirable. However, watching him ride with the unispired chase group was difficult. You just felt his pain and even though I was rooting for Cancellara. I wanted to see Boonen bridge the gap and then have those two square off in the arena. Could you imagine if it came down to those two sprinting the last lap to possible victory....now that would be must see tv. But it never materialized as Cancellara used his Super Powers and took home the Victory.
